The Black Collegiate Women (BCW) student organization was created by Zainab Ahmed (c/o 2018) and Edwina Opara (c/o 2020). Their vision was to form a support group that would empower and unite women of color on NDSU’s campus. The organization serves as a safe space to talk about the issues and experiences of women of color in predominantly White spaces. BCW is intended to provide opportunities for learning and growth through discussions, as well as encouragement and support. The women of BCW support and encourage each other in personal and academic achievement, host events that showcase the beauty of Black cultures, and reach out to young women of color in the community to mentor and nurture their spirits and minds as they grow into womanhood.
