Tools for Exploration – Employment Trends

Hello Bison Herd,

I am back again to discuss some more exploration tools that you can use to identify potential majors and careers. Last time we talked about CareerExplorer which is an inventory assessment tool that looks at your interests and personality traits to present careers where people with similar interests and personalities are successful. This week we will be highlighting an analytical tool that can help you make informed decisions called Employment Trends.

Employment Trends is a database tool that the Career and Advising Center has in partnership with Lightcast that allows you to find important information about different careers. You can search for occupations by entering keywords or filtering by industry. Once you find an occupation you will be presented with the following information;

  • Occupation Description
  • Core Tasks
  • Employment Trends
  • Top Employers
  • Education and Skill requirements
  • Example/Alternative Job Titles

While Employment Trends offers similar information to that of O*net, another database tool that we discussed in a previous blog, Employment Trends distinguishes itself by offering its information in a format that allows for quick browsing compared to a more in tensive research session that you may have when using O*net.

Employment Trends can be found on the NDSU Career and Advising Center website in the career exploration tab under Explore. If you have any questions or would like assistance utilizing Employment Trends or any other tool or service offered by the Career and Advising Center, you can stop by our office in Ceres Hall room 306. You can also contact us at 701-231-7111 or at our email ndsu.cac@ndsu.edu.
