Resume Tip: Formatting and Balance

When writing and organizing your resume, be sure to check the formatting to ensure that it stays consistent. For example, the font color and font style should be the same throughout the entire resume. However, if you would like to add some bolded headings or italicize specific titles to make certain words or phrases stand out, you may do so. If you choose to use this kind of formatting, you must ensure that the bolded or italicized headings are equal throughout the resume and balance one another, meaning that if you italicize one job title, you must italicize all job titles. It is important for resumes to be uniform, but also stand out in a way that employers will remember.

What formatting does for a resume:

  1. Makes it easy to read quickly
  2. Ensures content stands out
  3. Demonstrates attention to detail
  4. Showcases written communication skills
