Scholarship Recipient #NDSUintern Spotlight: Charles Beyer

Major: Finance

Company: Baird

Internship Title: Private Wealth Management Intern

Location of Internship: Dallas, TX

Why did you choose the company that you work for?

I made a connection with one of the financial advisors during my senior year of high school and I stayed in touch with him since. Through the connection, I was told about the great culture at Baird and an amazing internship opportunity.

What were some of the requirements for your internship?

Day-to-day tasks include client meetings, excel projects, and helping clients with things such as tax forms, stock research, and much more.

What is your favorite part about your internship experience?

My favorite part would be meeting the clients and learning about them and what they did to become successful. Often times people trust their financial advisors with their life savings, so building a more personal relationship with them is not fun but important to the business altogether.

What is the most challenging part of your internship? How have you overcome these obstacles?

The most challenging part was balancing summer classes with working full-time. I also have been studying for my financial license, so finding enough time to give each part enough energy and focus has been somewhat challenging. To overcome this obstacle I have created a strict schedule and stuck to it, this has helped me tremendously not only in work and school but in life as a whole.

How did you find your internship?

Through a personal connection

Why was it beneficial for you to register for credit(s) through the Internship Program offered through the Career and Advising Center?

I have been working to graduate in 3 years and having the ability to receive credits for my hard work makes it easier to achieve that goal of mine.

What advice would you give a student who is in the process of searching and applying for an internship?

Connections are everything in the context of not only internships but everything around you. Relationships are the building blocks for success, and as soon as you can leverage those connections anything is possible. Make a connection and stick with them, even if it means just shooting a text every now and then. It is also key to show interest in your industry and dive deep into your studies beyond just the classroom. The bottom line is to ask questions, reach out to people, and show gratitude to those around you.
