Careers within the government and public service sector are vast, to say the least, but these career options have one thing in common – they are in place to better communities, regions, countries, and our world.

This panel presentation will help attendees better understand career options within government agencies and public service roles and identify how an education and particular skillset will allow for success within this sector. Each of our panelists will share their unique education and career journeys, and they will share their advice and insight into this career path. The session is open to all students, faculty, and employers.

Matthew Warner, Moderator
PhD Candidate, English Department, NDSU
Graduate Coordinator for the Graduate Professional Skills Academy

Matthew Warner is a doctoral candidate in the Rhetoric, Writing and Culture program of the English department at NDSU.  Prior to enrolling in the program, he worked in software development in the United States and in China.

Josh Boschee, Panelist
ND House Representative, District 44

Josh Boschee received his Bachelor’s degree in 2003 and his Master’s degree in 2008 from NDSU. Following graduation, he worked at NDSU for eight years in the Office of Admission, Orientation & Student Success, Student Activities and the Career Center. In 2012, Josh was elected to the ND House of Representatives by his north Fargo neighbors, where he continues to serve in his third term in the office. When not attending meetings, he serves as the Broker at Hatch Realty helping lead a team of over 50 Realtors and professionals as one of the region’s top real estate companies. Josh and his partner, Zach, live in downtown Fargo and enjoy all the sights, sounds and tastes that come with being near such great small businesses and nonprofits.

Dr. Kjersten Nelson, Panelist
Associate Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, NDSU

Dr. Kjersten Nelson is an associate professor of political science at NDSU. She is an Americanist who focuses on gender in U.S. politics, political behavior, and the courts. Dr. Nelson teaches courses on American politics, public policy, and research methods and has had the opportunity to advise many students in different internship opportunities. Before going into academia, Dr. Nelson worked in politics; while it took her awhile to land on a career, she did always know she wanted to work somehow in a public service field.

Kole Nichols, Panelist
Graduate Student in Applied Economics, NDSU

Kole is a F-M native, graduating from Moorhead High School in 2017. Kole became interested in Economics and Political Science during his time at Moorhead and chose to pursue these two subjects as his majors in college. During undergrad at NDSU, Kole engaged in Student Government and several public-sector internships, ranging from work on Capitol Hill, to work in two different federal agencies, to two stints at the White House in separate roles.  He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in economics to further propel himself into a career in public policy, where he hopes to one day work in a think-tank or on a congressional committee.
