An exciting fellowship opportunity in Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) is available with the Emergency Response Capacity Team (ERCT), Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB), Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP), Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
ERCT is tasked with the development of trainings and provision of response capacity consultations to improve the global emergency workforce and operational capacity to better respond to public health emergencies. This includes capacity at CDC and internationally with foreign governments and external agencies.
Research Project: We are looking for a candidate who is interested in hands-on experience on Global Risk Communication and Community Engagement Operations, the establishment of sustainable and effective emergency RCCE programming in countries. Under the guidance of subject matter experts and the assigned mentor, the participant will receive training and hands-on experience on RCCE operations.
Learning Objectives: Various topics areas and activities may include:
- Approaches to interest and action related to public health priorities, particularly those for RCCE operations in emergency responses and public health organizations
- Contribute to the development of emergency response operational guidance and meeting materials for RCCE Ops
- Analyzing risk communication and community engagement plans, policies, and procedures
- Participating in the development of new initiatives that contribute to operational improvements in risk communication and community engagement
- Contributing to the development of internal and external reports and other administrative level documents
- Monitoring project performance through various internal and external performance reporting channels
- Coordination of RCCE emergency response and public health organization plans, policies, and procedures
- Development of proposals for conference call presentations, securing subject matter expert (SME) participation, and message/material dissemination and follow-up
- How to conduct periodic assessments of public health and emergency response organizations to identify and address outstanding emergency-related risk communication and community engagement needs
- Supporting capacity building activities, including developing training materials, facilitating training sessions, and conducting post-training evaluations
The participant will also learn the core functions of global health RCCE, enhanced emergency response operational support tailored to public health professionals and public health professionals’ needs, RCCE assessments, and activities to develop operational capacity.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 15, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields (Public Health, Health Communications), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by August 1, 2022. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational and computer skills
- Experience in or knowledge of risk communication and community engagement and/or health communications
- Experience in or knowledge of issues in public health preparedness and response
- International working experience in public health emergency preparedness and response
- Proficiency in other languages (for example: Arabic, French, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish) is highly desired but not required.
