Cook County, Illinois is the 16th largest economy in the world. The Cook County Treasurer’s office collects over $11 billion in taxes from over 1.8 million parcel of land, and distributes those monies to over 2,200 taxing bodies, such as municipalities, schools, libraries, law enforcement offices, which rely on the funds for their day-to-day operations.

The real estate property tax is generated as a result of an intricate and complex system of laws, calculations, and the work of a number of governmental bodies and offices. The Treasurer’s Office, in addition to collection and distribution of taxes, handles many other related functions. It plays an integral role in, for example, refunds, bankruptcies, condemnations, tax objections and exemptions. It plays a special role in programs arising out of other governmental bodies, such as senior tax deferral and federal forfeiture. It runs the annual and scavenger tax sales, participated in by buyers from across the country.

An intern for the Cook County Treasurer’s Office will be exposed to the challenging office work that is in demand by law firms, accounting firms, and governmental bodies. In addition to the work, the times in the office are exciting, with the Treasurer pushing the Cook County envelope on automation and increased efficiency in handling its functions.

Spanish speaking preferred

An intern will be supervised by and work directly with the Treasurer’s staff and will be exposed to a wide range of experiences that include but are not limited to:

Customer Service – Assisting Taxpayers with inquiries, printing duplicate bills, reviewing/accepting documents, directing taxpayers to the correct departments/offices.

Mailroom – Sorting incoming mail, processing checks, delivering mail to the intended department(s).

Tax Research – Reviewing requests and providing resolutions to written issues/inquiries.

Refunds – Reviewing applications and comparing documents to ensure refund eligibility.

Finance – Assists with review, development and implementation of policies and practices for financial management, revenue budget controls, accounting document proofing.

The duties listed are not set forth for purposes of limiting the assignment of work. They are not to be construed as a complete list of the many duties normally to be performed under a job title or those to be performed temporarily outside an employee’s normal line of work.
