The main focus of the job is the safety and security of inmates and staff in the jail. You would be assigned to many roles in the jail. We have Deputies working in the Booking area when new intakes are process. This is where we search for contraband and ask our in-house questions. At times, intakes can be uncooperative, either being passive/physically aggressive and under the influence of drugs/alcohol. We will train you how to deal with these individuals. We also have Deputies assigned to the housing units where the inmates are staying. We have housing units designed for the Deputy to be in with the inmates. These are usually with inmates who are considered “low risk”. We do have a maximum pod where the Deputy station is not accessible to the inmates, but Deputies do have to go inside the pod frequently do conduct our well bring checks to make sure all inmates are ok. We also have Deputies assigned to Master control, who controls all the doors in the jail to maintain security. We also have “rovers”. These Deputies are able to float around the jail to wherever is needed.
We will train you in defensive tactics, OC and Taser. There will be incidents inside the jail (fight, uncooperative intake, assistance calls etc) where you will be expected to respond and act accordingly.

Working in the jail will provide you with a great opportunity to obtain experience and skills. We have had many Deputies in the jail move on to our patrol, or move on to Fargo, West Fargo PD etc. The skills you learn, including how to communicate with inmates has help many employees to de-escalate volatile situations.

The Jail has extra assignments available. We have CERT (SWAT version for the jail) and STG (Intelligence unit) for the jail. These are extra duties that you could join after a period of time after being hired. There are plenty of opportunities for everybody!

We look forward seeing you!
