Major: Computer Science
Company: Johnson Controls
Internship Title: Software Engineering Intern
Location: Milwaukee, WI
Semester: Summer 2025
Why did you choose the company you work for?
Johnson Controls has a focus on values that align with my own personal morals. Their focus on sustainability and philanthropy allow me to feel like I am making a difference beyond the work I am doing in the office.
What were some requirements for your internship?
My required tasks for the internship were fixing the back-end logic for a website that would display the status of air-conditioning units to customers. It made the experience even more impactful that the work I was doing was customer-facing and applicable to my future career goals.
What is your favorite part about your internship experience?
My favorite part was the opportunities to give back to the community in Milwaukee. Once a month, we got paid time off to volunteer at the food bank or build houses with Habitat for Humanity.
What is the most challenging part of your internship? How have you overcome these obstacles?
The most challenging part of my internship was jumping into a huge code base that was largely internal work, I felt like I jumped into the deep end of a pool. Luckily, my manager was understanding and able to catch me up to speed once I communicated these hesitations.
How did you find your internship?
I used the job board ‘Ripplematch’ and was made an offer last summer as an IT Intern. After completing this internship, I was granted the opportunity to return as a Software Engineering Intern this past summer.
Why was it beneficial for you to register for academic credit through the Internship Program offered through the Career and Advising Center?
I appreciated feeling like my internship was helping my academic career in addition to my future career.
What advice would you give a student who is in the process of searching and applying for an internship?
The purpose of internships is to figure out what you like/don’t like in a role. Keep an open mind, and be open to soaking up as much information as you can.
