Major: Accounting
Company: CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA)
Internship Title: Logistics Tax Intern
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Semester: Summer2025
Why did you choose the company you work for?
I chose CLA for my internship because they have a strong presence at NDSU and are a well-known part of the campus culture. Additionally, their office was conveniently close to home, and they offered the type of work experience I was looking for to grow my skills and prepare for my future career in Accounting.
What were some requirements for your internship?
Some of the requirements for my internship included showing up consistently and demonstrating professionalism. I was expected to conduct taxes for S corporations, partnerships, and businesses, attend coworker events, and utilize software such as Microsoft Teams and Excel effectively. Additionally, I was expected to continue learning and developing my skills throughout the internship.
What is your favorite part about your internship experience?
My favorite part of my internship experience was getting a firsthand feel for the real-world work environment. I enjoyed meeting many other interns and coworkers at CLA, networking with employees from other CLA offices, learning more about tax principles, and attending various events.
What is the most challenging part of your internship? How have you overcome these obstacles?
The most challenging part of my internship was that, as my first experience in the accounting field outside of coursework, it was sometimes difficult to understand what was happening and why certain tasks needed to be done. To overcome these obstacles, I learned how and when to ask questions, seek guidance from my coworkers, and apply what I was learning to real-world situations.
How did you find your internship?
I secured my internship by applying through LinkedIn, as I had not previously spoken directly with anyone from the company. I had heard of CLA through the NDSU Accounting Club, which gave me some familiarity with the firm. After receiving the internship offer, I made an effort to network and meet people within CLA, toured the office, and attended events such as the “Meet the Firms” career fair and Accounting Club events. These experiences allowed me to connect with professionals, learn more about the firm’s culture, and build relationships that helped me succeed during my internship.
Why was it beneficial for you to register for academic credit through the Internship Program offered through the Career and Advising Center?
Registering for credit through the Internship Program was beneficial because it not only counted as an official internship experience, but it also helped me recognize how much I was learning both professionally and personally throughout my time at CLA.
What advice can you give to others who are trying to obtain an internship? What helped you the most?
A piece of advice I would give to others trying to obtain an internship is to stay positive. Finding internships can be stressful, but staying hopeful really pays off. Networking is also key; reach out, attend events, and connect with professionals. Most companies genuinely want to meet you, and the people you meet can become valuable contacts you may cross paths with again in your career.
