#NDSUintern Spotlight: Thomas Samson

Major: Mechanical Engineering- Company: RMS Company – Location of Internship: Coon Rapids, MN – Internship Title: Manufacturing Engineering Intern

  • Why did you choose the company that you work for?
    • Something that stuck out to me about this company was that it is in the med device field.
  • What were some of the requirements for your internship?
    • Create 3D models to print and use during the manufacturing process. Create work instructions for machines or software. Assist the other engineers with their tasks.
  • What is your favorite part about your internship experience?
    • Seeing what I created being used in the manufacturing process.
  • What is the most challenging part of your internship? How have you overcome these obstacles?
    • Trying to take the specifications and requirements for the 3D models and translating them into a functional model. I have overcome this by learning more how to use Solidworks as well as communicating thoroughly with the people requesting the models.
  • How did you find your internship?
    • Through the NDSU Career Fair
  • Why was it beneficial for you to register for credit(s) through the Internship Program offered through the Career and Advising Center?
    • To have this experience count as credit for a technical elective by applying the experience to the knowledge I’ve gained so far from my other classes.

  • What advice would you give a student who is in the process of applying for an internship?
    • My advice to incoming interns is to apply to as many internships as you can and to go to the NDSU Career Fair.
