Internship Tuesday – Fact of Myth? – Part 1

Internship Eligibility:

Myth – “I am a freshman in college, and I don’t think I’m eligible for an Internship.”

Fact – 1 in every 10 students who reported an internship to the Career Center this Spring 2019 semester were freshmen! The Career Center can help bolster a student’s chance of landing that desired

internship in their first year of college by providing resume reviews, mock interviews and interview tips. Feel free to stop by the Career Center if you need any assistance in these areas.

Finding an Internship:

Myth – “It’s impossible to find an internship for my major”

Fact – While some majors may have more internship opportunities than others, most students are able to find an internship for their major, related skill set or career goals. There are 3 basic ways of finding an internship:

  • Networking with family, friends, past employers/colleagues, or faculty. Attending Career Fairs and Expos can also be an invaluable way of getting an ideal internship or post college job. Don’t ignore your contacts! If you need help brushing up your networking skills, don’t hesitate to stop by the Career Center.
  • Online job boards – The Career Center runs an internship, part-time and full-time job board called CAREERlink. You may be able to also find a part-time summer job on CAREERlink. If you have not yet done so, login and browse the numerous internship positions posted on CAREERlink. The Career Center also offers Career Exploration services that can help you find a suitable internship or career path.Image result for prospecting
  • Prospecting – Students can check organizations of interest online and call or email their Human Resources department to see if they are interested in hiring a college student for an internship. I have met a few employers that had job openings but didn’t advertise it on any job board because they weren’t actively seeking applicants or filling the vacancy wasn’t a priority at the time. So, by being proactive and reaching out to employers, students may land an ideal internship they never knew existed!

Gaining Valuable Internship Experience:

Myth “Employers only hire interns to make coffee, check the mail and answer the phone”

Fact – There are many employers who provide valuable opportunities for students to gain relevant knowledge and skills they will need to be successful in their post graduation careers.

Internship eligibility:

Myth – “I need to possess all of the skills employers are looking for to become successful on the”

Fact – Internships provide a great way to learn and acquire skills that you will need to get hired in a field of interest or to succeed in a desired career path. As long as the student possesses transferable skills, employers will often be willing to hire them as an intern.

Gaining a valuable experience through an internship or co-op is as important as getting good grades. The time to do an internship is NOW.
